Arts and Culture in Rotorua

Rotorua is a hub for art and culture, due to its vibrant Maori history.

Rotorua Culture Parks and Rotorua Culture Shows

If you’ve been to Rotorua before and haven’t experienced one of our spectacular Maori shows, you’ve been missing out!

Follow your storyteller through the forest through to the Maori village as you watch the re-enactment of the first story in the Chronicles of Uitara. Enjoy learning firsthand about the welcome and farewell ceremonies and taste the traditional meal, the hangi (a meal cooked underground using steam). See warriors at Miti Village travelling downstream; enjoy a guided bush walk, an energetic performance and much more. Te Puia also offers the opportunity to enjoy a hangi, a Maori performance and a walk around Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. Please contact us for recommendations, or group bookings, Sudima Hotel Lake Rotorua staff are more than happy to help.

Rotorua Museum – Te Whare Taonga O Te Arawa

Visit Rotorua’s excellent museum to hear the stories which have shaped the past and present of our region. The Rotorua Museum is located in the architecturally iconic and world-famous Bath House.

Discover what made people come from all over the world to ‘take the waters’ and indulge in the treatments administered right here in the Bath House. This is a building with a captivating past and is a well-known Rotorua attraction.

Other exhibitions include a discovery of the violent and devastating eruption of Mount Tarawera, the fascinating story of B Company 28 Maori Battalion in World War II and a stunning exhibition of ancient taonga (treasures) of the Maori people.
The ‘Rotorua Stories’ cinematic experience is one aspect of the museum that you must see. CGI technology brings our fascinating and turbulent past to life, while surround-sound puts you right in each dramatic scene. This cinema experience runs every 20 minutes.

The Rotorua Museum is open every day except Christmas Day, from 9.00am to 5.00pm (in winter) or 8.00pm (in summer) and is just a short walk from the hotel. After your visit, stop to smell the roses in the Museum ground’s Government Gardens or enjoy a picnic amongst the Edwardian elegance of the landscape.
